On January 20th, new cycling rules were introduced on Groningen’s main square Grote Markt, aiming to create a safer and more organized space for cyclists and pedestrians. Cyclists are no longer allowed to crisscross over the Grote Markt and scooters as well as mopeds are fully prohibited. The new regulations will be enforced in February, after which the police will be able to step in if the rules are violated.
Oosterstraat and Gelkingestraat will also become pedestrian-only zones to enhance safety. Alongside these changes, new rules have been introduced for delivery scooters who are granted an exception. A campaign has started, indicating where pedestrians and bicycles are allowed and where not.
Reporter Emma Hizette speaks to cyclists and pedestrians to find out how they feel about the new cycling rules.
A map outlining the new routes is provided below.

Green lines indicate where cycling is allowed, while red lines show areas where cycling is prohibited. Arrows mark the permitted direction for cycling routes.
